(More customer reviews)I purchased this lock after purchasing a lock of similar construction but less dexterity. I used the first U-lock I purchased to lock my nice tri-bike (I knew I'd be foolish to use a wire lock), and within the first week someone tried to steal my bike--they failed, but I knew I needed to take more precautions.
This U-lock is much better for several reasons:
1. the bar is thicker than the previous lock, and thus looks harder to cut (and of course IS much harder to cut, but looks of locks can actually be better theft deterrents at times)
2. The U is much bigger (i.e. longer) than the previous lock, and is thus easier to secure around the frame and wheels (my previous lock was too small and made this task almost impossible)
3. The lock is VERY sturdy--no one has disturbed my bike since I started using it
Of course there are some drawbacks
1. Because this lock is bigger and more durable, it is also heavier and bulkier. I cannot see riding my bike with this in the bracket it came with. But I just keep it in a backpack--I have a very light tri-bike, so I wouldn't want to attach extra brackets to weigh it down anyhow
2. This lock, like any, does not absolutely guarantee your bike will not get stolen--some people are very determined thieves. However, it certainly is a much better deterrent than any lock I've used.
So do I recommend it? Yes. For the price, the peace of mind is amazing and it has kept my bike (which is visibly worth stealing) safe! Only draw back is it's big and heavy--but don't you want a lock to be heavy?
